Every year, students from all walks of life have the opportunity to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, one of the nation's oldest and most iconic competitions. They progress from classroom to cafeteria, from auditorium to civic center, delighting friends, family, sponsors and fans, just as millions of other students have done before them.

In previous years, Austin-area kids participated in this incredible program through the Houston Public Media sponsorship, one of the largest programs in the country. The West Austin Chamber is thrilled to provide a program where Austin’s top spellers can compete closer to home. The winner of our bee will be featured in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in DC! We are excited about this venture for a number of reasons.

Dedicated teachers and parents help students prepare throughout the school year to compete in their local school Bees. The top spellers from our region’s 10-counties will advance to the Austin Spelling Bee on March 25th, 2018. The counties zoned for the West Austin Chamber Austin Spelling Bee include Bastrop, Blanco, Burnet, Caldwell, Fayette, Hays, Lee, Milam, Travis and Williamson.

The 2016 Scripps National Spelling Bee co-champion and Austin-native, Nihar Janga says, “This is a dream come true for many Austin area kids. I am very happy that an Austin champion can now go to Scripps Nationals directly. Austin is very competitive and the winner of the region truly deserves going to the awesome "Bee Week. I would like to congratulate the West Austin Chamber of Commerce on making this happen and wish them a great first year!"

The participation of children in spelling bees can result in many benefits for the child, family, school and the community. The child learns not only memorization of words but grammar and vocabulary. They gain practice with health competition and improve their cognitive skills and C-O-N-F-I-D-E-N-C-E!

We hope that you join us for this adventure!
